The entire episode was just wrong! I saw them do that to the struggling divorcée across the street from our former house. She wasn't home. At least they could put a notice on the door to pay within 24 hours... So sorry that happened.

There should be more warnings from them.
In Baltimore, it's a mess. The system there allows for people to buy people's water bills. Then they get liens on their homes.

I can beat you on this......
I have 2 houses side by side......the other house was where Joe Love & I lived. I bought Georgia's house next door...I couldn't live in that house anymore...both my Mother and Joe Love died in that house.....so it sits there with clothes, furniture, and even canned goods in the cabinets.
Back on topic.....I took a group on a 16 day trip out west, while on the road, a water pipe burst open in the cellar (dank, dark cellar) of the old house. It filled the cellar up and then ran down the driveway to the road.
Across the narrow road is a pumping station connecting my water company to the Louisville Water company. Every morning, a man with the water company comes and checks the guages....7 DAYS A WEEK.
I get back 16 days later, second day back I get my water bill for both houses and the house next door has a total of $2360.00.....
They have my cell number, they have my brother's telephone number, and the guy checking the pump told the office there was water running doun the driveway.
I am still fighting with them....they knew I didn't live in the house.....luckily my house is on the Louisville Water COmpany and they can't turn mywater off.
I told them ....take me to court Please! I stopped getting bills from them after 3 months.....

Sounds very wrong. i have never heard of it happening here. Of course the girl could not help it but why ever did they not give you the option to pay before they turned the water off.
