That's a sad story but such is life...we can't control the way it goes.

Re: Yes, the age difference doesn't help.

Both of my parents were only children, so I only have second and third cousins who are twenty years older than I am. We have little to nothing in common, yet my brother is eighteen years younger than I, and we are really close.

Sometimes it is hard to keep up with cousins.

The age difference between your dad and your uncle Willy could have played a big part where closeness counts. It sounds like they also had very different goals. It is sad that your uncle ended up a drunk after all that he went through. Time and circumstance can really change a person. Hopefully, he will eventually find peace.

A sad story. I can see that perhaps your dad didn't want you to be exposed to them too much. One thing of interest, I have a 3rd cousin who had an aunt or sister who died as a toddler because a pot of boiling water fell somehow on her!

guess by the time your Dad grew up he probably wouldn't have had much to talk about with Uncle Willie. I agree that is a big age gap. I had a lot of paternal cousins 20 plus years alder than me and it wasn't really possible to be friends with them. I was just a little kid to them. They were closer to my dad.

Sounds pretty well unfortunate right from the start. Drink has destroyed many normal marriages.
