I had a similar experience...
I was at a friend's house. She was in the shower because we just came back from track practice; no one else was home. I was sitting on her bed reading a magazine when I saw movement out of the corner of my eye and it was...
an iguana!
I screamed. I knew it was her sister's, but I didn't know it could escape from it's cage, and I didn't know what to do besides watch it watching me.
Everything turned comical when my friend came out of the shower, didn't see the iguana standing in the doorway, and I couldn't get the words out of my mouth in time to warn her. She stepped on its tail and the iguana turned and tried to scratch her. She was trying to hold her towel with one hand and grab a flailing iguana (with sharp claws!) with the other. I was pretty helpless, and laughing by that point.

Cujo? Is that you?
I'm right there with you on the dogaphobia. The worst part is knowing that they can tell when you are frightened of them.

Bad Dog!
I had had random cat dart into my house. When I was moving into a house, I propped the doors open as you did. The problem with cats is that they hide! They hide under things and up high on top of things, in the closets and maybe in drawers. I was hoping it would just run out if I made enough noise but I wanted to see it to make sure. I couldn’t close the door for fear it was still inside. There I worked, my door propped open for hours, in hopes that the cat would run away if it were still inside my house.

Your Heroic Boys
I'm sorry you had to experience that fright, but I am so happy your son is such a sweetheart and looks out for his mommy. What a touching story.
