Body language to express if happy or not, all the emotions that some creatures must feel. Not sure about reptiles or similar types. It wouldn't be my choice of study.

It would be great to know what pets are thinking. Who's a pretty boy then?

Graysome has taught me so much. Sometimes he shows love by staring at me, I wink a blink at him and he does it back to me. he also holds out a paw which is a loving gesture. he will sit on the lap od someone afraid of cats...meany.

Re: Pat B,
I think one thing that makes our relationships with dogs so successful is that they do, in fact, express their emotions in ways we recognize more accurately.
I always forget the proper word for it, but the corners of the mouth are good indicators of feeling, if they are drawn back in a real grin, for instance, or pushed forward indicating a distrustful mood. Ears and eyes, body position... We have learned to read dogs well over our long partnership with them.
(My dog-trainer daughter tells me about these things! She's the one who has clicker-trained sheep!)

Happy St. Paddy's day to you!
I think sometimes we humans are more instinctual and reactive than we like to think we are. Since the 4-leggeds don't actually have a language that we can learn to speak, much of what we assume about their thoughts and ideas is guesswork. I don't think it's a mistake to ascribe similar processing to our pets, but they may be operating at a Zen level we have yet to reach...
