The newer the computer it seems the bigger the pain to work with them. they quit putting slots as well for cds/dvds.

That's the view from my front deck. I've been here some 7 years and the view has changed so much from when I could see Pike's Peak and the tops of Garden of the Gods--now hidden behind trees!

If there is a little slot on one edge of the laptop that can accomodate a memory card, you slip it in there. The laptop should bring up a window showing picture files. When you click on that, the images come up. With mine, clicking on an image brings up a larger view of the image, and clicking on that brings me to a page that offers some choices including editing tools. I click on that one and that brings up the image on the edit page for sizing, trimming, and leveling.
There is another icon that goes to filters which I don't use. The last icon is for editing lighting, color, and clarity. It also offers a spot corrector.
All the editing stuff is built into the laptop, I didn't have to install anything special, and it is adequate for my needs. One thing it doesn't do is correct focus.

That sounds like a lot of trouble. I have never figured out how to do photos on my lap and I've had it for almost a year now. But, I don't have a lot of good ones like you do so I don't worry about it.
