A warm smile from the right person can just make one’s entire day! So true.

Re:
Yes, I’d sure like to know how Fitzgerald found it!

Re: Good morning Sherri
Thank you. Yes, you would think so but maybe the person didn’t care. It was in a monthly teachers’ journal in the Milwaukee area in 1893. Maybe the author thought it wasn’t very good…and left off his/her name.

Re: Thanks, Kabu!
The poem appeared anonymously in a journal (magazine) for progress teachers of Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1893, a few years before Fitzgerald was born. Perhaps he had a connection to its author? No, I can’t imagine tossing it unless there were other copies.

Yes i agree
A smile is warm. weather its real or not. The next person seeing it. The feeling of gratitude grows in the heart and more smiles are given.

I wonder if it was found thrown away as not being quite what the author wanted to say and when found in the waste basket, sent to the paper as anonymous. Myself I cannot imagine anyone throwing away something this beautiful.

The anonymity makes it all the more intriguing of a poem...

Good morning
Interesting find. It does make one think. The author's unknown part is a bit odd. You'd think that someone who wrote such a poem would want credit for it.
