It is a job to understand the ways of a parent when one is a child, but obviously it can cause confusion when everything seems black and white and yes and no has no difference.
Other comments are superior to what I can suggest.

What an insightful piece you have posted! Indeed, it sounds as though you have nailed the nature of your father and it should give you a sense of closure, resolution, and a measure of peace. I wish it had been different for him as a child and as an adult.. To me, the losses he endured: both parents; war casualties; his wife; etc., probably added to his innate sense of detachment, though perhaps it was not consciously. Either way, you have done well in understanding the "why" of your dad.

Good afternoon
Thank you for the backstory. Whether negative, positive, serious, or forever a dreamer, personality traits define how people perceive us and how we view the world along with the people who are closest to us. Because of the various ways we see things that directly impact us, processing information and feelings differently is another extension of our makeup as an individual.

I understand how it is to be raised by a dysfunctional parent - but it seems to me you turned out to be a very kind human being. No doubt he learned good things from you even if he wasn't good at showing it.

your final sentence really says it all for we are all imperfect in some way or other. I am very slightly dyslexic and my eldest son even more so. He grew out of his disorder mostly, he also found using the computer to get his degrees ever so helpful.
