I can't understand why he kept going back to her home. he must have known it would be embarrassing for them both.

Well, really, he was a bit dopey for continuing to visit the lady. So perhaps 

 he should have been a gentleman, with an emphasis on trying to

comfort the Lady in the old age manner.
