I first read it as 'moose.'
The mouse-eating naturalist was Farley Mowat, studying wolves in the Canadian north. He observed the wolves during the deep winter seemed to be living on mice. He couldn't just accept what he saw, but decided to see whether he himself could live on mice. As it turned out, he could.

You made me think of a movie I say years and years and years ago about a fellow that spent the winter in Alaska alone and he survived by eating mice.
