Re: Ciel.....

.....It comes from "hoe boy".   Always looking for work along the way, those that climbed onto trains for transport always carried their hoe's with them for garden work.  My Dad did not carry one with him because he intended to make his money cooking along the way but basically everything was basically the same.  When late evening came, they'd hop off the train and build a campfire for the night.

Now I'm wondering where the word 'hobo' comes from.

I never knew that about tramps.

I did not know that about the word tramp. I had only known as a derisive term toward women.

Sherri.....

.....My Dad was one but they called themselves Hobo's.  He ran away from home when he was 15 and began riding the rails.  When he needed money he would stop in a little town and go to a small cafe and tell the owner that he would do the cooking just for the tips.  That always got him a job.  He had worked in his dad's cafe since he was five and was a wonderful cook and fast at it and the big tips rolled in.  When he had enough for more riding the rails, off he would go.  He did that until he was 22 and he gave it up and went to permanent work at Ford Plant in Detroit.

We called them Swaggies in Australia, they carried their tin with a handle to carry a couple of eggs some Damper and jam in to cook over an open fire, or whatever some kind country woman had given them. An old blanket tied around themselves to wrap up at night to keep warm.

Never heard these terms explained like this. I always thought a tramp was that sleazy witch who flirts with your husband like you're not even in the room. Go figure!
