This blogger is taking a swallow dive into a pool that could be quilt or kerbstone.  You can watch him in the sections on travel, poetry, fiction and diary.

After 26 years he has been an English teacher and made a good start in the global financial services sector; he even went on a business trip to India for five weeks.  He has worked from time to time in the Waterstone’s Booksellers chain in the UK, and in good bars and night-clubs.  Set to be successful in the career and, ultimately, despite an awful way with money, wealthy, what is it that motivated him to throw all this away, leave his close friends and family behind, and to move back to Italy, alone?

Well…one:  he stopped relating to the people around him after being emotionally skinned by a relationship in which he felt alternatively - by the hour, day, week, month, which will it be tonight - loved and loathed (he’s no thick-skinned smart-ass, to neither of these feelings can he defend himself, they just crash into him and he braces).  After a ten month long wake of dizzy gyration in which he thought he felt fine, he eventually had to find somewhere out of view to topple and crash, to learn the mistakes and take heart from the strengths.

Two: a career in finance suits the person that is happy devoting themselves to the understanding of abstract concepts designed by someone else to make money in increasingly tangential - though mentally engaging - ways and have people working for them.  He’s not criticising, or proclaiming that everybody should leave companies, just that it doesn’t suit him.

Three:  There was a part of him that he had left behind in Italy, an important part that the rest of him missed.

And now?  Well, the path is uncertain.  There is a chilling negative figure in the bank; there is no employment; there are no friends or relatives.  He has a car, a laptop, a creative mind, and he can write.
