For over 40 years, I have been looking for clues through observation and experience, sometimes from books, often from other people's models of Reality--looking for what things matched up, whatever they were called, and for patterns and at what seems to work and what doesn't seem to work... When I see something new or different from what I think is real or true, I turn it this way and that, upside down, inside out, to see how it can be true: what needs to be also true, for this new thing to be...
