My dad, the astronomer, was quite certain that aliens would never expend the immense resources to cross the vast distances of space to investigate on little boondock planet on the edge of the galaxy. My arguement was, in essence: How could he reasonable assume that we could know what an alien would do, or why? We know why we would travel weeks, months, years to get someplace.
