CALLING ALL POETS Tis the last of the night, Well pass midnight, Dawn not even a suggestion, Here I sit coldly awake, Thinking of something, Something to write, Something for my peers, For while I write for myself, It is you my fellow poets, That I truly address with words, Words powerful, others pathetic, Yet I must fight, compelled even, Is it creativity, or captivity, Master of my work of wordy thoughts, Or slave trying to break the chains, I am both, words my brush and sword, Wielded in an... HOME PORT Every sailor has a home port, A berth that is his and his alone, A good woman, warm fire, good cheer, A place to weather any storm by the sea, Whether in his bed, or at the pub, The wharf, or the hills and forest around, He belongs, this is home, part and part of him, A harbor snug and secure against life perils, A place to rest, refit, resupply, and relax, No matter where in the world he sails, His ship’s name and home port identifies him, Even more than his name or rank, Thus with a... JOURNEY Each day of life, A stop along the way, From birth till death, Do we travel far or not, At times the distance, Measured not in miles, But in character and strength, For challenges and new visas, Arise with each and every dawn, Even nightfall, presents more, Never fear if thine day is tattered, Adversity is the sauce of life, A worm knows nothing, An eagle flies much higher, So seize this day for the prize it is, Only you can weight your success, Now go forth and be more…………. LYING ONE UPON ANOTHER, IN ENDLESS ROWS, MUTE WITNESSES....ANCIENT ONES....

BRICKS I Brick an ancient necessity, born out of scarcity, In the land of the Three Rivers, before time began, A need for stone where there was none, If ever necessity was the mother of invention, Water and clay they, not much more, plus the sun, Later a levying of straw for strength, viola, Three hands long, one hand wide, one hand deep, The humble mud brick was born, mighty it was, For just with these and few timbers from Lebanon, Fortresses, palaces, homes, temples, and pyramids, All created... HARVEST It is fall, time to harvest what we have sown, Through a spring and summer of drought and pests, Our seed, vines, and trees have struggled, To the sun they have raised their leaves, Storms, hail and frost, all have taken their due, Did we plant deep enough or too deep, Weeds and four legged thieves did we keep at bay, Each and every day we have tended our gardens, Even from time to time at night when the deer about, Now, after growing season not long enough, harvest final, What shall we... MEANS OF CONVEYANCE ACROSS THE WATER......................................

Boat Boat, a vehicle that transports one upon the water by keeping one out of the water, Actually a boat is a hole in the water whose chief purpose is to keep one semi dry, Now there are all sorts of boats, little one man inflated dinghies to the Nimitzs, Can a tiny dinghy and a five thousand man floating air field really be the same, Well of course the answer is yes and no, and I shann’t bore you with details, Enough to say that they both float, if they spring big enough leaks they sink, Even... MY MISTRESS, THE SEA, IN ALL HER MOODS........

THE STORM The tempest came without warning, Tis was early evening, second watch, There had not been a cloud in the sky, Then within minutes it was upon them. A cold green hell with mountains white, Screaming wind, piecing cold, darkness, For hours the fishing sloop crew fought, Yet with each wave, the bilges deeper, Water poured in, the pumps of no avail, The Captain swept over aboard, lost, The mate and crew kept her close haul, Nothing seem to make a difference, Each made peace with God or... A LAMENT.......

WINTER’S BREATH The edge of winter, cold most cruel, Tis in the air, cutting like a knife, As we shiver, the leaves fall down, Ice and snow all around, deeply so, Lock in a vice natural, sleep if you can, For spring is still five months away, Months of cold and dark, forbidding, Yet, even now there is life within, As nature sleeps, and man huddles, Good cheer abounds around the fires, Drink and be hearty, creatively conservative, Soon Winter Solstice, day short alarmingly, Will the Sun reappear,... THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT............

FOLLOWED She was being followed, She knew not who, or why, Yet, a shadow flowed ever behind, A menace without name or form, Never approaching, always there, No confrontation, just hostility, Was she being stalked by an ex, Which old lover would hate her so, Could someone have marked her, His next trophy to be savored slowly, Perhaps it was the government, Her old research team, disappeared, Vanished one by one, by this or that, Accident or death, some just missing, Seven people, none old, none...
