Ariel
This was tragic indeed. I'm sorry for your loss. I've seen people swell up to unrecognizable proportions in just minutes. Anaphylaxis is no laughing matter. I've been stung many times; but, thankfully I've never been allergic to them. My sympathies to you and your family.

Hornets, wasps, bees, and other terrors of the sky
Ariel,
I am very sorry for your loss! That is shocking and tragic. AS a boy, I hated wasps and hornets, seeing them as useless creatures. OK, I still do. I knocked down their nests and killed them when i could. Bees, I appreciated. I learned to catch them using just a leaf folded over, gently squeezing them and then putting them in a bug catcher device i had. i always loved to collect and study creatures. Eventually, I learned to catch bees bare-handed, finding that they calmed as i squeezed them slightly on the sides, avoiding their stings. REcently, at a friend's house, I was showing off when a bee was buzzing around us and i caught him in my hand, shaking him quickly to "stun" him. Guess who stunned whom? He stung me, sadly. i am luck y not to be affected by bee stings, but i hated knowing that he was affected and would die.
The story of the provinces is both confusing and gratifying. i am afraid i don't remember what goes where when it comes to Spanish provinces. We went to the Atlantic coast to visit my fathers' friends in a city whose name has been attached to a famous sherry i think, from teh region. We also went east along the Mediterranean to visit the Alhambra and the nearby town. I loved that , and, in keeping with my experiences of the world via animals, while wandering the streets of teh "Arab" area alone, i was adopted by a huge dog. He was a puppy but easily 100 punds. He bound out from between several buildings, ran up to sniff me, then followed me as i vainly tried to locate a mosque and a church that were reportedly both in teh area. Just when i was contriving ways to brign this beast back, he found something of greater interest (food I'm sure) and ran away. The area was beautiful and enchanting with or without the pup.

My heart walks with you in your grief.
When death is sudden it is difficult to live with the reality for a long time. We find our thoughts reaching out at times to one who is no longer with us. We can only accept one day at a time for our hearts and minds are wounded in such a way only God's healing touch can make us whole again. God bless you and your family and friends as you grieve the loss of a dear friend. Faith, hope, love and prayer! faholo

ariel,
I am so sorry about your friend's tragic death. No matter what the circumstances, it's always a blow to lose a friend, but it's particularly painful when so completely unexpected and over such an apparently 'trivial' event.
This brings back childhood memories, where we believed that a hornet's sting, as opposed to that of a wasp or bee, was alway fatal.
I have never been stung by one, nor did I know of anyone actually dying as the result, until now...
And beware of those damn 'flying mice', a horrible invention, if you ask me!
And one more thing: I would like you write a letter! What kind of letter you'll see when you go to my blog...

Wow Ariel...that is so sad I am so sorry about your friend.
I was out in my yard yesterday and got stung on my big toe by a bee. It is itching, burning, swollen and it's driving me crazy...but at least I'm still alive. And Bees a big as mice...yikes. Watch out for those buggers!
