A Week Away

I am in the hills and have since last Saturday. Yesterday, I got to know how to connect, in a part of the country where connectivity is still an issue. I am hving such a good time - tking pictures, watercolouring, sitting under the trees, reading, writing and napping. Also some cooking. Today I made... Sign in to see full entry.

Chiks to beat the Heat

Yesterday, Tuesday, it was 42 degrees in Delhi. After a morning walk with Mahesh and Aloe, we came home to find the chikwala and his bike parked in the driveway. A chikwala is a man who makes bamboo blinds or shades for doors and windows. Its an age old Indian tradition and a great way to keep the... Sign in to see full entry.

A Creative Task

Yesterday afternoon was a creative time for me. I have been working on a report documenting a project on gender and HIV/AIDS for a UN agency. It's time to produce the final report. I work with a printing house and we have been doing the layout over the 10 days. It's an amazing process. Venkat, the... Sign in to see full entry.

A Reluctant Mother

This morning, as I lay in bed, wondering why sleep was not coming to me, I got an sms. It was from my son Kabir, wishing me Happy Mother's day and saying I was the best mom. I smiled, thanked him in reply, and went back to trying to go back to sleep. My thoughts turned to how he, in the midst of a... Sign in to see full entry.

An Afternoon Nap

Three hours later I woke up, washed my face, and came out of the bedroom. Mahesh was watching TV and offered to make tea. I turned to HBO and began... Sign in to see full entry.

The Indian Laburnum or Amaltas

It’s that time of the year. Amongst the many beautiful and majestic flowering trees in May is my outmost favourite - Golden Shower Tree or the Indian laburnum. It’s Latin name is Cassia fistula and it's Hindi name is Amaltas. It's bright yellow flowers just take my breath away and lift my spirits.... Sign in to see full entry.

An Injured Aloe

Two days ago, Aloe had trouble walking. Normally a very active dog, he seemed to be having trouble with his two front legs. He found it hard to stand and when he could, he had to drag himself to move forward. We all had theories as to what had happened to him and they were more or less in the same... As it is in Heaven

Two days ago I went to see a Swedish film, at the invitation on my friend Stina. It was part of the European Union film festival being screened in Delhi. It was in the British Council, a rather beautiful building designed by one of India's foremost architects, Charles Correa. I hadn't been in there... Sign in to see full entry.

Rain, layouts, coffee and Bhutan

Yesterday, only a layout was scheduled. But, the rain, coffee and Bhutan were the surprise elements. I was due to work with Venkat - the layout person working on my report - yesterday at noon. As I was driving over, the sky was getting dark and a wind that smelled of rain began to rise. In their... Sign in to see full entry.
