Mix together the sexy charisma of Tom Jones, the earnest crooning of Yanni, the peacenik strivings of John Lennon, throw in a little Praise the Lord, add clear-eyed tackling of taboo social issues and you’ve got Pakistani singing star, Najam Sheraz. BESA is the title of a new book by Norman Gershman. The full title reads, BESA: Muslims Who Saved Jews in World War II," and recounts the Albanians who committed themselves to saving the lives of 2,000 Albanian Jews persecuted by Nazis. Last week, I wrote about my summer in Israel in 1975, when during a weekend trip to Jerusalem, I stepped over a small refrigerator that had been cast out on the sidewalk in Zion Square.
