You get what you pay for: A Themestream/WrittenByMe postmortem

(When I first put this article out there on Epinions.com, Themestream had either gone under totally, or was just about to close its virtual doors. What I said here is pretty generic, so it generally applies to WrittenByMe and other such sites as well. That doesn't mean I don't miss them, though; I just wish they'd used a Blogging Network style of business model, charging customers by the month or year and dividing the pot with the writers.) Now's the time for me to invest in that laser printer,... Sign in to see full entry.

The Anchorman Strikes Again

I'm including this entry in here now because Katie Couric used a clip from this movie on her first day on the job, as anchor to The CBS Evening News. Will Ferrell portrays anchorman Ron Burgundy in the movie entitled The Anchorman (or at least that's the short version of the title). This was at a time when men ruled the roost in the newsroom. Along comes female reporter Veronica Corningstone, eager to become an anchorwoman herself. The usual group of hijinks ensue, to the hilarity of the... Sign in to see full entry.

Compulsive overeating treatment

I've been leafing through a book called Locked Up for Eating Too Much, the diary of a woman institutionalized in what was then called an Eating Disorders Unit for compulsive-overeating issues. There are a number of areas of legitimate criticism of the program in which she was institutionalized. The most important one, from my perspective, is their failure to evaluate patients completely for signs of other disorders. Although the nursing staff at the hospital in which she was institutionalized... Sign in to see full entry.

I bet you remember where you were this time!

I literally woke up to the news five years ago. At the time, I was living alone in a house I'd inherited. It was my custom to leave a radio on overnight, so that the first thing I heard every morning was some portion or other of Spike O'Dell's WGN-AM morning-drive radio program. The weatherman was about to be introduced, to give the routine forecast they usually gave at 7:55; just before the weatherman was to open his mouth, O'Dell broke in and introduced the newsman, who delivered the news of... MYOB

The initials MYOB stand for Mind Your Own Business. It's what I tell myself every time I'm tempted to achieve fame. What connects MYOB with fame? Well, here's the way I connect the two. There are just certain things I'd rather not have happen to me - like my former boyfriend (the so-and-so I dated in college - I'd use stronger language, but it's prohibited by Blogit's terms of use) discovering some piece of information or other I'd rather keep private for now. It's not that I'm deliberately... Sign in to see full entry.

From Aldonza to Dulcinea

As Garfield said in her blog today, we just found out that someone lost a cat today. Poor little Dulcinea was taken in by her human four years ago, and that human was successful in training Dulcinea Cupcake to become tame. That's why I referred to Aldonza in the title; Dulcinea's human is familiar with the musical Man of La Mancha, in which Don Quixote tilts at windmills and sees great potential in a prostitute named Aldonza. (He names her Dulcinea, and prefers to see Aldonza as a refined and... Sign in to see full entry.

Blogging hypergraphia

Back in early 2003, I'd say about two months after I joined Blogit (then The Blogging Network) to earn us some extra money, I was essentially ousted from my top rankings by a blogger named Claudette. If you go to her Member Profile, you'll find that her account has been closed, although her Member Profile is still up and running, sans blogs. I'd written a post about the whole episode in early April. I didn't like the idea that she seemed not to (as the old slang term goes) have a life. It really... Sign in to see full entry.

The heavens are crying

Garfield was absolutely right - I really did tell her that the heavens were crying today. We have a huge green glob sitting right over the city on radar right now, and that means only one thing: rain, and lots of it. Fortunately, the rain isn't coming in the form of thunderstorms, so I don't have to worry about power outages or anything, but it's still symbolic of the way people are feeling today of all days. On top of that, I have another one of those self-limiting stomach bugs I get every once... Sign in to see full entry.

Thanks again, Dad

It seems hard to believe that almost five years ago, I posted this obituary for Fr. Mychal Judge on Epinions.com. I re-posted it on Blogit (then known as The Blogging Network) in order to earn some money for my writing. (At the time, Epinions.com wasn't paying for what amounted to op-ed pieces or obituaries. I always need the money, so I reposted a lot of Epinions.com material over here - yes, my own written material only. I'm not stupid enough to violate copyrights intentionally.) All I can say... This post has little to do with 9/11

This story, fed to AOL by AP, tells of a young woman who found out that her biological father died trying to fight off terrorists who hijacked United Flight 93 on 9/11/2001. The reason why her discoveries - about the identity of her biological father, and the circumstances surrounding his death - came so late in her life was that Minnesota law forces young adoptees to wait until they're 19 before they can get copies of their original birth certificates containing the names of their biological...
