Does anyone else remember what they were doing on 9/10/2001? Not 9/11, 9/10. I do. I had inherited property which needed home repairs badly. I had hired a handyman to take a look at the drywall, in the hope that I could get it replaced. Not very memorable, I know, but it's the truth. Sign in to see full entry.

Ultimate truth
One series of posts I'd made on Potpourri (a blog I'm currently "cleaning up" with an eye toward either refocusing it or deleting it), on a variety of topics, got me to thinking about something important to those of us with a more philosophical bent. (I also have to admit that I was inspired to revisit this particular post by something Ariala wrote in one of her blogs, about how people use the belief that they belong to the One True Church as an excuse to commit all kinds of criminal behavior -... If you watch carefully, you'll see Capt. Picard
This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot. John Boorman's Excalibur is definitely an adult telling of the Arthurian legend. It is also very serious, dark and gritty, with a great deal of sexual energy. Because the Arthurian legend is so familiar to all of us, I will spare you a detailed telling of this legend in favor of focusing on the movie. Suffice it to say that the reason to see Excalibur is the same reason to see Cool Runnings - to see the moviemakers' interpretation of... Sign in to see full entry.
Practicing medicine without a license
In this article on AOL, a reporter tells of the death of a Brazilian immigrant at the hands of an unlicensed plastic surgeon. Apparently, the surgeon was unlicensed in the United States, but trained as a doctor someplace else; I got the impression from the article that he, too, had immigrated from a foriegn land (probably Brazil) as well. Because he was unlicensed here, he could not even obtain privileges to perform outpatient surgery (much less the privilege of admitting patients to the... Sign in to see full entry.
Almost leaving someone at the altar
In this article on AOL, the story of a bride who got jilted on her wedding day is told. She and her then-fiance called off the wedding six weeks before it was to occur, because she found out that he was cheating on her. The source of the information was the man who was also dating the woman with whom the fiance was having an affair. This other man - a perfect stranger to the equally-jilted woman who thought she was about to be married - simply came into the jilted woman's office one day,... Sign in to see full entry.
Blogger drives people crazy!
I was reading MightyHolyWarrior's Views of a Right-Wing Uncle Tom (a blog he has deleted from his account several years ago), and he was talking about a subject I found myself relating to easily despite our racial and gender differences. I am that rare bird - someone with an "invisible disability" (a bipolar kidney patient) and libertarian political views. I don't think that we disabled folk should be asking for disability payments from the government. Although I don't like the term "differently... Sign in to see full entry.
I know this much is true
That's not the Wally Lamb book, but a lyric line from the song True, sung by Spandau Ballet, a group which was popular briefly in the early 1980s, just in time for MTV. True was perhaps their most popular hit, here in the US; it peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 when it was popular. For a long time, I wondered what happened to the band. I knew they were far more popular in Europe than they ever were here; in the USA, they were pegged as this band which produced lush, romantic music, and wore... Sign in to see full entry.
Giant chimps take over the world!
Three years ago, AOL had a feature on giant chimps (no, not the typo I almost wrote - they're not giant potato chips!) in Africa. Evidently, there's this subspecies of chimps that's very large - almost the size of a gorilla - meaning that they can't hide out in trees like normal-sized chimps, but must stay on the ground and eat the same food as gorillas. Scientists seemingly discover new species in this fashion all the time. Okapi were thought to be mythical or fictitious beasts (rather like the... Sign in to see full entry.
Something to think about
To quote EmpiricalPragmatics (a former Blogit member whose account has been closed): If people who professed a faith had genuine faith, there would be no homelessness. EP, you said a mouthful. This is so true. To take the concept a bit further, there would be no desire on the part of the PC types against whom I rail in Have we achieved The Dream? (a blog I've deleted) to institute politically-correct "civil rights" laws if people who professed a faith actually lived their faith. We wouldn't have... Sign in to see full entry.
Fugitive caught
Yesterday as of this writing (yesterday being 9/8/2006), fugitive Bucky Phillips surrendered to authorities, just barely into the state of Pennsylvania. Phillips is a 44-year-old "career criminal" (as news reports have described him) who is accused of shooting three state troopers on two separate occasions, one of them fatally. (Another, shot at the same time as the dead trooper, is still in critical condition.) I'd heard news reports that Phillips is also a prison escapee, although I have to... Sign in to see full entry.
