The Oscars

I don't think he was a big fan of award shows, but when his film Freud opened in 1962, Monty believed his work was Oscar material. In a phone conversation with his brother, Brooks,... Malden Quote About Monty in Eternity

Karll Malden had his own theory as to why Monty's performances were undervalued. "Because he always became part of the warp and the woof of the script. So much so that his artistry was not always appreciated. If you watch him in From Here to Eternity, he completely immerses himself in the character... Sign in to see full entry.

Dame Nature Flirt

During the run of Monty's 1938 Broadway play, Dame Nature, countless girls would stop by Monty's dressing room. Monty charmed them all with his compelling gaze. Limp

For his role in the Broadway play, The Searching Wind, Monty perfected a limp for his character, who had been wounded in the leg. He hopped about his dressing room, experimenting first with a cane. Rehearsing Without Lines

Director George Stevens sometimes rehearsed his leads from A Place in the Sun (Monty, Elizabeth Taylor, and Shelley Winters) without running the lines. The purpose was to create natural responses from the actors without worrying about the actual words. Judging from the film and performances, the... Sign in to see full entry.

Consolation Prize

Although Monty did not win the Best Actor Oscar for From Here to Eternity ( see 10/2/09 entry for nominations list ), he did receive a nice gift from his director's wife, Renee Zinnemann: a miniature gold trumpet mounted like an Oscar. Monty treasured it for the rest of his life. Sign in to see full entry.
