It's Saturday morning and it's going to be a long weekend - of heat, noise and dust. Actually, it has been this way for several weeks now. And, it will continue for a while. As I have written before, we are re-doing the kitchen and finishing the basement in our house. The basement project - among... Sign in to see full entry.

555 Pages - The World is What it Is
I just finished reading a hard cover book of 555 pages. The World is What it Is, by Patrick French, is the authorised biography of the well known writer V.S. Naipaul. Naipaul was born in the West Indian island of Trinidad, his grandparents originally coming from India. He left for Britain as a... Sign in to see full entry.

Overheard
Do you overhear conversations that amuse or exasperate you? Yesterday, I was at the health club, changing after a massage and shower. A group of five women came in and took over the room. They were discussing how a member they know was complaining that one of the security guards (who comes with the... Sign in to see full entry.

Lunch with my sisters
Tomorrow I am having lunch with my two sisters. This is an achievement. It's a struggle to get us together. We have to find a day on which we are all free. And, with the heat come allergens in the air. Right now it's the Red Silk Cotton tree which I love and admire. But, its cotton flies all... Sign in to see full entry.

Lizards and other creatures
This morning, as I sat on the couch reading the paper and sipping my tea, I looked up towards the bookshelf to see a lizard whiz by. Lizards are a common sight in our home. As a matter of fact, they have always been. Growing up in the eastern part of India, we lived in a large rambling house with... Sign in to see full entry.

Growing Children
Last week my son - Kabir - turned 19. It's the first time he has been thousands of miles away from home on his birthday. One year he was in the north of India, traveling with the school basketball team, of which he was captain. In 2006, I was away in Afghanistan. The rest of the years, we have been... Friends who are no more
As part of my photo sorting project, I came across some photographs of friends who are no more. Here they are - Michael and Eileen - in a restaurant in New York city. And, here is one with the two of them and me (I guess a waiter may have taken this). It was in 1987; I was living in Italy and on my... Sign in to see full entry.
