Without further ado...the Toilet Paper, German Style

I don't know if I mentioned it before but the toilet paper here in Germany as the consistency and the "softness" of cheap low grade paper towel back home. We've tried at least 10 different brands and I'll say that the smoothess of them all could have been use as a fine grain sand paper! We also seem... Sign in to see full entry.

An act of kindness, in a funny way.

I was feeling kind of OK yesterday so I decided to go to Heidelberg. On the way back, there were two anglophone tourists (Brits by the sound of their accents) in the bus and they seem rather lost and a bit worried. It was raining heavily and was very difficult to see any street names. So, I asked if... Sign in to see full entry.

Ups and downs in the life of an Auslander...

As most of you have probably guessed by now, Auslander means foreigner. But this entry has about nothing to do with Germany this time. Since yesterday I have not been feeling too well; it's a recurent sickness that no doctors have been able to put a name on. It's started in my twenties after I came... Sign in to see full entry.

Girls in Short Skirts and Sun Dresses

I thought I was elsewhere yesterday when I was waiting for my bus in Bismarztplatz, Heidelberg. Girls in shorts? Women in sun dress? I couldn't believe it! Here in the prude land of Baden-Wurtemberg women were showing their legs! It has to be a hot summer day, or more precisely a hot Spring day!... Sign in to see full entry.

The Maypole or Maibaum "Erection"

Now that we have started June I realise that I never talked about the Maibaum or Maypole. Although it is mainly a custom from the south of Germany, Bavaria more specifically, we also have a small one here in Neckargemünd (Baden-Wurtemberg). It used to be made every year out a Maple or Hawthorn or... Sign in to see full entry.

A few misconceptions concerning Germans

As I was reading a web-site about Germans the other day (on going research for my own web-site), I realised that they way the author perceived them and therefore wrote about them, can be a bit misleading if you know nothing at all about Germans. For one thing, he describes them as being rude and... Sign in to see full entry.

Hail and rain and thunder

It has been very humid and warm (around 30oC) for the last week or so. We could see Dilsberg in a shroud of clouds and the heavy air was starting to hide the tip of the mountains. So, a storm was in order and a storm we got! It was a big storm with violent winds and hail and rain and thunder. But it... Sign in to see full entry.

Violence among youths, USA vs Germany

I had a strange converstion with the mother of a boy going in the same school as my son. It started when she complained about the fact that it takes her a lot of time to bring her son every morning to school and to pick him up after school and that I naively suggested that maybe it will be easier if... The Residenz in Munich

There is, in the middle of Munich, a great big Residenz with a beautiful treed park with fountains, flower gardens and a white domed building to rest while listening to the violin player... A good part of the building was destroyed during the second WW but most of it was rebuilt using the original... Sign in to see full entry.

Train accident

My son was waiting for his S-Bahn (city-train) when he heard that the one he was supposed to take had had an accident. The train in question got off the rails and they had to wait for another train, a regional Bahn that one. It is not too frequent but when it happens the whole public transport...
