One of the things I wanted to save for a separate post was this. I implied in my last post that men are expected to want to "get ahead" at all costs - to be aggressive, competitive, and so forth. Although I implied that this is due to social pressure to conform to a given set of masculine ideals, I'm not sure I really care what causes men to conform to these ideals; whether they're hormonally-based (that is, whether a man is competitive and aggressive due to the fact that testosterone circulates... This morning, on a hunch, I decided to check to see if we had a dial tone on our phone - and we don't. I suspect the problem is nonpayment; we received a cutoff notice from the phone company a while back. Frankly, to put it mildly, I'm not in the best emotional shape right now. What if a medical emergency happened? I might be dead if I can't call 911 under circumstances like this. This might have happened in February if we'd had our phone service cut off then.
