Fulfilling My Civic Responsibilities

I have been summoned for jury duty. It's about time. I've been eligible for something like 16 years, and I've always wanted to be on a jury. I do have some complaint with the system, though. Why did they call me up at the very busiest, most insane time of the year for my workplace? I work at a... Sign in to see full entry.

I Have a Theory

The world's weather patterns are going wacko; it's not just in my part of the world, I know. Look at the snow they had in Florida--last winter, I think. Look at the flooding and the vicious storms and who knows what else, all over the globe. The earthquakes, the wildfires, the mudslides... I have a... Sign in to see full entry.

Dependence on Electricity Can Be a Problem

Especially if your electricity can't seem to stay "juiced up" for more than a week at a time. My power went out Friday night during another storm, and it was not restored until yesterday afternoon. So, once again, I was stuck without computer power...no possibility of updating my blogs with the... Sign in to see full entry.

Some Strategies for Easing Homeschool Woes

DREAH made some excellent points in her blog about homeschooling earlier, and I want to share some tips and strategies that my mom used. She started homeschooling my younger brother in 1986, when he was in eighth grade. She homeschooled my baby brother all the way through. She helps me homeschool my... Sign in to see full entry.

Chocolate and SSRIs....and Cravings.....

Hi, I'm Edit, and I'm a chocoholic.... Hi, I'm Edit, and I have PMDD. And I have a query that I cannot seem to find the answer to. I recently started taking Zoloft to address my Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder, specifically, the crashing lows that I get in the two weeks before my cycle begins. I've... Have you ever noticed...

some of the odd contradictions of modern life? Consider climate control. Where I live, it's cold and dry in the winter, and hot and humid in the summer. Summer's heat indices are usually ten degrees above the actual temperature, and winter's wind chills are usually about ten degrees below the actual... Sign in to see full entry.

Sic Transit Gloria Mundi: The Loss of the Seven Liberal Arts in Education

Just when I thought the educational level of this country could sink no lower, I learn that there is a movement afoot to abolish objective measurement---that is, grades---in schools. How, pray tell, are we to gauge a student's abilities and efforts if we do not issue grades; if we do not, in some... Sign in to see full entry.

Tempus Fugit!

It amazes me to remember how slowly time passed when I was a child. Even well into my teens, the years seemed to slouch by like a lazy boy off to mow the lawn. As I've gotten older, the years have suddenly seemed to telescope in on themselves. No sooner do I accustom myself to writing 2002 on my... Sign in to see full entry.

Is a Puzzlement!

Can anyone explain to me why, if CDs have more storage capacity than cassette tapes, the audio version of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix requires 23 CDs, but only 17 cassettes? I've seen this with many audio-books. The cassette version requires fewer tapes than the CD version. In some... Sign in to see full entry.

Teach Your Kids Sign Language

I did something controversial when I taught my 18-month-old son some simple signs for the things he needed every day. I didn't know I was entering into disputed territory, but the fact is that this form of communication with infants is hotly debated among the experts. Frankly, I don't care what the...
