More flowers

Another 'final' service today, at one of the smaller churches in our benefice (group) of six. There were about twice as many people in church as usual, which must say something. Glad to see me go? Sad to say goodbye? Looking for free eats and wine? No, not really. That doesn't do them justice, for... Sign in to see full entry.

Our anniversary

Today is our thirty-ninth wedding anniversary, so Ed and I tottered into Norwich on our bus passes for a spectacular day out. The chain on the shower tidy we bought only last week is already rusting, so we took it back to Lakeland. It's our second attempt at this particular shower tidy. We bought... Clearing out...

...literally. The Council have now collected our old cooker and the fridge which started leaking about three years ago and has lived in the garage ever since, plus two or three beds with mattresses in varying stages of broken springs. Today, eldest daughter and family came over with a large van... Sign in to see full entry.

When your children become your parents...

Isn't it an odd feeling when your children become your parents? Eldest daughter and family popped over for the day last week, just to catch up and share holiday photos. In the course of the day, eldest daughter said, "By the way, I've taken over your birthday arrangements." "Oh?" "Yes. When Bex told... Sign in to see full entry.

Three farewells

Had three farewell services yesterday, which means four down and two to go, plus the final biggie. The first was also a baptism within communion, so I had fun with bubbles which always go down well. After the service they presented Ed and me with a picture of the church, painted by a local artist.... Sign in to see full entry.

The first farewell

Ed and I had our first farewell service yesterday morning. With six churches, we now have three weeks of farewells, prior to the the big farewell on August 23rd. The church was satisfyingly full (although it has to be admitted that with a medieval church the size of an aircraft hangar, ’satisfyingly... Sign in to see full entry.

A letter from the Bishop

All the clergy have had a letter from the Bishop about Swine Flu. The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have suggested that worshippers should only receive bread, not wine, for the duration of the pandemic, in case sharing the chalice transmits infection. The last I heard, about a fortnight ago,... Sign in to see full entry.

An interesting conversation

Took Home Communion to 97-year-old Em. She couldn't hear a word I said as her hearing aid was out of action. "Could you look at it?" she asked hopefully. "I can't get the battery in." No wonder. She'd somehow managed to jam the battery into the top of the hearing aid rather than into the battery... Sign in to see full entry.

The Bishop's final service

It's not just me retiring. Our local (suffragen) bishop is retiring too and had his final service at the Cathedral yesterday afternoon. The Cathedral was packed, so either everyone was glad, or extremely sorry, to see him go. I think it was the latter. He's a quiet, self-effacing person with a brain... Sign in to see full entry.

I can't stand it any longer

I can't stand it any longer - being cut off from the outside world without any internet access, that it. So we've kind of moved up to the bungalow and are sleeping here. It means commuting daily but I suppose a half hour's journey on relatively traffic-free roads isn't too bad. Not too high a price... Sign in to see full entry.
